Teens Involved (TI) purpose is to "develop my gifts and abilities to serve my Savior." Teens choose to participate in a variety of events that range from singing, musical instruments, drama, preaching, puppets, and children's Bible storytelling, with many more in between. All are based on gifts and abilities that can be used to minister in the local church. Area TI which includes churches from Pinellas and surrounding counties is held right here at Starkey Road Baptist the end of February. Teens begin preparing months in advance. The top five qualifiers in each category are then able to move on to Regional TI which is held in Jacksonville in late April. Regionals brings churches from all over Florida and Southern Georgia. This is a wonderful opportunity for our teens to explore the gifts that God has given to them, to develop ministries here in our church, as well as gain confidence in themselves as they minister to those in attendance.
To get teens closer to an extreme God, this camp uses "high adventure recreation" or to put it plainly, extreme sports. Their campus touts "cable swings, zip lines, and climbing elements, including a climbing tower that reaches over 60 feet high." Swings include a 3-person swing beginning with a 60 ft drop then accelerating, pulling nearly 3 "G's", and a one person swing beginning with a 15 ft. free fall from 47 ft. about the camp! Snowbird also offers canoeing, caving, horseback riding, mountain boarding, mountain surfing, paintball, puddle jumping, rappelling, rock climbing, skate park, slip-n-slide, and white water rafting. On top of all that, this camp gives the campers meaningful praise and worship times, intense dramas, and life-changing devotions daily. Snowbird, not exactly what teens had planned, but exactly what God has planned for teens.
In past years we have had opportunities to share in serving the Lord through inner-city ministry in Chicago working with a community that was diverse in ethnic backgrounds from Puerto Rico to Afro-American. Our teens had opportunities there to do VBS, clean streets, build relationships with other teens and children and tell them about the love of Jesus Christ. Our student missions have also included VBS for a Haitian church in Ft. Lauderdale and in Lafayette, LA, and cleaning a camp in Chattanooga, TN. Another wonderful opportunity has been to minister and work with the mentally handicapped at a facility in Wisconsin called Shepherd's Home. SRBY wants to offer opportunities for our youth to serve God and experience in just a small way the possibility of full-time service through missions. These trips are opportunities for a student to grow spiritually in preparing to be part of a mission team, as well as putting into action what it means to be a servant of Jesus Christ.
